Diaphragm Valves are a type of valves used to control and balance the pressure and volume in a fluid flow system. The valves use diaphragms instead of gates, needles or discs to control the flow. The Diaphragm Check Valves have a vacuum chamber that can hold the liquid with a diaphragm which controls the volume of the chamber. The chamber gets the fluid from the inlet of the pipe system. The diaphragm of the Diaphragm Control Valves is attached to a threaded stem and handle. As the handle turns, the stem lowers or raises. This brings the diaphragm up and down increasing or decreasing the volume and the pressure is inversely proportional to the volume at any given temperature. The Diaphragm Type Float Operated Valves use a float to control the movement of the diaphragm. Once the pressure is controlled and regulated, the fluid is then allowed to move through the outlet.

Advantages of Diaphragm Flow Control Valves

  • Can be used as on-off and throttling service valves.
  • Offer good chemical resistance due to variety of linings available.
  • Stem leakage is eliminated.
  • Provides bubble-tight service.

Disadvantages of Diaphragm Control Valves

  • The weir may prevent full drainage of piping.
  • Working temperatures and pressures are limited by the diaphragm material. Generally the pressures are limited to 200 psi (1380 kPa) and temperatures up to 400 F (204 C).
  • The diaphragm may also limit the hydrostatic pressure.
